Mid-morning sketch
Jagat is one of a string of villages perched on a
flat table of rock above the river. (Jagat's cluster
of buildings is barely visible at the base of the
painting.)
The sound of the rushing river and the steep
canyon walls made it feel like we had really begun
trekking in the Himalayas.
Mid-way through the sketch, Jonathan realized
that he was sitting quite close to several small piles
of poop, their source (human or otherwise) unclear.
They had not been obvious when he sat down, but painting
has a way of heightening one's powers of observation...
The surroundings encouraged him to paint quickly and with
flowing, reckless strokes.
