** Responders arriving at the incident ahead of the Hazardous Materials Van send radio reports that the overturned tanker is an MC 331 High-pressure gas cargo Tank Truck with a cargo of Sulfur Dioxide.
Responders now have two problems to solve if they are to control the emergency:
EMERGENCY ACTION--SULFUR DIOXIDE
Stay upwind, out of low areas, and ventilate closed spaces before entering. Positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and structural firefighters’ protective clothing will provide limited protection. Isolate the leak or spill area immediately for at least 150 feet in all directions.
(1) Gather information that will help them safely plug the leak in the overturned truck, and
(2) Predict the behavior of the released Sulfur Dioxide as it disperses through the city. Use these predictions to plan for citizen evacuations.
